Turkmen women weavers, preserving the original patterns of carpets that trace their origins back to antiquity, have passed them down through generations and brought them to the present day. These exemplary carpets and carpet products, perfected as an art form and inherited from our ancestors, currently adorn the exhibitions of our country’s museums.
In the exhibition and collections of the historical and local lore museum of Mary province, alongside other valuables, carpet products are studied and preserved. A distinctive feature of this work is the use of new interactive technologies. In the scientific study of the carpets present in the exhibition and collections (patterns, quality, the use of natural or aniline dyes, preservation conditions), close cooperation is maintained with specialists from the region’s carpet-textile enterprises.
If a carpet or carpet product is incomplete, restoration work is carried out by specialists if possible. If restoration is not feasible, the historical value is preserved in its current state, displayed to the public, and safeguarded for future generations. The storage conditions of these historical treasures are continuously monitored for humidity, cold, and heat in accordance with regulations. Scientific discussions not only benefit museum staff but also help carpet artisans study weaving techniques, patterns, and natural dyes (their composition and origins), applying these insights in modern carpet production, ensuring the growth and refinement of this craft, and enhancing the global prestige of Turkmen carpets.
